inkdishWhat’s better than gettting the creatives together for happy hour? Having our very own InkDish provide some artsy tableware for the occasion. We recieved a nice package with three collections-all original artwork from designers to tattoo artists. Thank you InkDish for jazzing up the spread- something sophisticated to go with the beer and pizza.

Ashley has taken the Official(unofficial) role of ‘Posture Coach’ at the HIVE and is leading by example(like a good coach should) with her brand new GAIAM BalanceBall Chair. We all got a chance to sit in it and after some consideration we have decided it’s pretty much “the Bomb.” Sitting at a desk all day can make your back pretty upset with you, but this chair encourages best posture practice and will make you and your back feel good. Seems like a really great innovation in “office chair” technology … oh yeah, It’s bouncy too! So when can we expect one of these at every desk?

The Power of a Creative Sabbatical: Off to NYC

As creatives, it’s our job to remain fresh and creatively inspired. How do you do that? Hang out with other artists? Go see a new band? Take a new route to work? Spend your lunch hour browsing in a bookstore?

Well, how about closing up shop for two months and going to New York City with the sole intention of soaking up the atmosphere and working only on personal projects?

That’s exactly what photographer and HIVE collective Chaz Cruz is planning to do. For the last few years, Chaz has run a thriving portrait and wedding photography business and has developed a reputation for getting shots that no one else takes.

“I always ask my clients what makes you you? What makes you tick?” he explains. “And then try to capture that.”

But Chaz felt in need for a little creative rejuvenation so he’s planning a two-month sabbatical to New York. “For the last two years I’ve only shot people. For these next two months, I want to shoot everything but people and do totally personal work.

Chaz was inspired by a TED talk given by noted designer Stefan Sagmeister who proposes the concept of the creative sabbatical. Sagmeister says taking time off from work to explore new avenues of inspiration can have big pay-offs in the form of higher levels of creativity and a renewed passion for your work.

Chaz is excited about the next two months. “I’ve already contacted a lot of photographers that I want to meet for coffee. I’ve seen their work and just want to get insights into how they work.”

Spending time on a personal project should be a liberating experience.

“Right now I just want to go out and shoot for myself,” says Chaz. “I want to grow as a person and an artist. Then my business can catch up.”

We’ll look forward from hearing from Chaz and seeing some work from his time off.

I Swear To Good You Are God At This from Holiday Matinee on Vimeo.

We give Holiday Matinee a lot of attention but the truth is they deserve every bit of it. Right now they’re getting an amazing amount of attention, globally, on the release of their new Book titled, I Swear to Good You Are God at This. Today marks the official release of the book and to celebrate, HM is throwing a mad crazy book release party at Bar Basic in East village. No one is really quite sure what to expect but we know two things for sure, (1) our very own Graham Downes will be MCing the event and (2) it’s sure to be “awesome.” (HM’s favorite word). So please do us a favor, do HM a favor, more importantly do yourself a favor and check out a preview of the book right here and for goodness sake RSVP for tonight’s party because if you miss it, you will likely carry the regret for the rest of your life.

A Lunchtime Holiday Matinee

February 15th, 2010 | Jason | No Comments »

bowling2Dave Brown of Holiday Matinee took a slew of interns, associates and friends to East Village Tavern and Bowl for a “holiday matinee.” Dave isn’t a show-off but when he came striding into the HIVE with the scoresheet in hand and a victorious air about him, it was pretty obvious what went down. I guess when you bowl 185 compared to 55′s,74′s, and 76′s, it’s smart to plan meetings that allow you to showcase your talent. We might have to get the collective over there to see how the rest of us stack up.

Note: Dylan Ousley was in attendance, and also did very well.
